BB-reference

The Chicago Cubs 1990 season disappointed fans hoping to see the Cubs build on their 1989 NL East Championship. The Cubs hosted the 1990 All-Star Game.

Regular season

The Cubs regressed to the mean in 1990, as 1989 Rookie of the Year Jerome Walton and Rookie of the Year runner-up Dwight Smith came back to earth, never to repeat the form they exhibited their rookie seasons.

Former Cubs ace Rick Sutcliffe was beset by shoulder problems and wasn't a factor in the Cubs season in 1990. Luis Salazar started the season as the Cubs' third baseman and it was apparent his best days were behind him. Closer Mitch Williams struggled with his consistency, spent some time on the disabled list, and even started a game for the Cubs.

Andre Dawson and Ryne Sandberg had solid seasons, as Sandberg hit an NL-leading 40 home runs and won the home run derby the day before the All-Star Game at Wrigley Field.
